Backward Quickness is defined as a player's ability to accelerate backward over a short distance. Backward Speed is defined as a player's optimal rate of movement backward through a specific distance or space.
The Next Testing Index, (NTI), for hockey is a 1000 point scale created to capture and report the key aspects of skating and reaction time. Elements within each of the sports specific tests are derived and weighted in a unique proprietary formula that exposes an athlete's strengths and deficiencies.
There are three main components that make up your NTI Score. Below is a step-by-step approach to understanding you Next Testing online report.
NTI Score - Joe Hockey |

Skating |

Puck Control |

Reaction |

The skating component of your NTI consists of forward and backward skating beginning with forward skating you will see in your report; forward quickness, forward speed, forward transition speed, and forward agility.
The Forward Quickness (135 points possible) and Forward Speed (40 points possible) scores are calculated as a result of your performance on several of the forward skating tests.
As an example: the diagram of a forward skating test defines quickness as the first 30 feet following reaction time and forward speed as the last 30 feet of the test.
The Forward Transition Speed (140 points possible) score is calculated from the skill element components of several tests highlighting the players ability to maintain as much speed as possible when changing direction or countering.
The Forward Agility (75 points possible) score is calculated from the skill element components of several tests highlighting the players ability to move laterally side to side.
The Backward Quickness (130 points possible) and Backward Speed (30 points possible) scores are calculated as a result of your performance on several of the backward skating tests.
Backward Quickness is defined as a player's ability to accelerate backward over a short distance. Backward Speed is defined as a player's optimal rate of movement backward through a specific distance or space.
The Backward Transition Speed (30 points possible) score is a players ability to maintain as much speed as possible when changing direction or countering.
The Puck Control Component of the NTI is comprised of Agility, Transition, and Quickness.
The Agility (85 points possible) score is based on your ability to move laterally side to side, while controlling a puck.
The Transistion Control (140 points possible) score is based on your ability to maintain as much speed as possible when changing direction or countering while controlling a puck.
The Quickness (60 points possible) score is your ability to accelerate over a short distance while controlling a puck.
The Reaction Component of your NTI consists of your ability to react both forward and backward.
The Forward Reaction (70 points possible) and Backward Reaction (60 points possible) scores are based on your ability to react to a visual stimulus and accelerate during either the forward or backward skating tests.
